Volunteer Corner: Youth in Action

During a typical volunteer shift at the FSC food pantry or Hand in hand Thrift Shop, you will see no less than 30-40 volunteers serving in various roles. Many are students and local youth from our community. We believe our volunteer opportunities provide an environment for people of all ages and different backgrounds to work together towards a common goal.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.

Each month, dedicated FSC volunteers pack pallets of food, clothing and other supplies to set up a Fresh Market at Joint Base Cape Cod. All individuals with Base access, including active duty members of the military, veterans and civilian workers are invited to visit Fresh Market to pick up fresh produce, dairy, frozen meats, canned goods, diapers, clothes and more. Many of our volunteers are veterans that have trained or served alongside those who visit. The atmosphere is filled with respect, as hand-shakes, hugs and laughs are shared.

Our many husband and wife volunteer teams recognize the challenges our active-duty members face. They remember what it was like for themselves, and realize that many veterans struggle to make ends meet. Their service training comes in handy in keeping operations running smoothly. Vets truly know the importance of team work! The Board and staff are grateful for all of our dedicated volunteers, who served our country and continue to serve their local community.
